“Honest Recreation” from Hamlet to Elsinore

November 29, 2023 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Join the UNC Critical Game Studies Program and the Program in Medieval and Early Modern Studies as they host Dr. Michael Lutz for his talk, “Honest Recreation” from Hamlet to Elsinore.” The talk will take place on November 29th, from 11:00am-12:00am via Zoom. Beginning with Shakespeare, Lutz’s talk brings early modern models of “play” into conversation with 20th century theories from Johan Huizinga, Roger Caillois, and C.L.R. James. Using these thinkers to clarify the racializing assumptions of play, the talk turns to a discussion of the 2019 videogame Elsinore that considers how the game both inherits and interrogates a legacy of race. Dr. Lutz is a Research Associate in the Literature Section of MIT. Sign up for the talk here: https://unc.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJ0odO2spjkvHtZKHApqPCQsywFOoOP6ElaM#/registration
