Jennifer Fleissner Lecture: Maladies of the Will, The American Novel and the Modernity Problem

March 25 @ 2:00 pm

The CSS welcomes Professor Jennifer Fleissner to talk novel studies and scholarship with the student body and faculty at large.

“Jennifer Fleissner studies nineteenth- and twentieth-century American literature, focusing on the rise of American modernity. Her most recent book, Maladies of the Will: The American Novel and the Modernity Problem (2022), “aims to reorient the nineteenth-century American novel’s engagement with modern subjectivity around the idea of the will, a concept that links American writers from Melville, Hawthorne, and James to Elizabeth Stoddard and Charles Chesnutt to European novelists from Goethe to Balzac to Eliot.”

On March 26th, from 11:00 am-1:00 pm, Fleissner will also be hosting a Graduate Lecture event in the Campus Y Room 103
