Bio

Kristján examines how humorous literature in the Italian Renaissance creates a space for criticism of the humanist ideal as well as enabling the development of a poetics of humanism. Puzzled by the lack of a comedic element in humanist literature, I look in particular at the influence of Boccaccio’s vernacular texts on comedies, jokes and other humorous literature in the 15th and 16th centuries and study its usefulness for periodization in the early development of humanism.
