Health Humanities Grand Rounds with Marion Quirici
Disability Studies: Rewriting Democracy
The writing classroom is a staging ground for the skills of empowered democratic engagement. In this talk, Dr. Quirici will discuss her experiences designing and supervising publicly engaged writing assignments that get college students involved in disability justice activism in the campus and local communities. She will share examples of pathfinding student work across genres and media, and argue for the potential of disability studies to redefine concepts of citizenship, community, and democracy.
Marion Quirici, Ph.D., is Co-director of the Health Humanities Lab at the Franklin Humanities Institute at Duke University, and a Lecturing Fellow in the Thompson Writing Program. In addition to teaching writing courses on topics of disability, neurodiversity, representation, and literature, she directs an interdisciplinary faculty working group called the Disability and Access Initiative, and serves as faculty advisor to the student group Duke Disability Alliance.
