The Transition from English 101 + 102 to English 105
Currently enrolled students and students admitted in spring 2012 come under the composition and rhetoric (CR) Foundations requirement in place when they entered Carolina; the new CR Foundations requirement does not apply to them.
Students entering prior to fall 2012 must complete ENGL 101 and ENGL 102; ENGL 100 may also be required based on placement scores.
Most students entering in fall 2011 or earlier should be on track to complete ENGL 102 in spring 2012. Those who placed into ENGL 100 in fall 2011 should take ENGL 101 in spring 2012 and ENGL 105 in fall 2012.
Effective fall 2012, ENGL 102/102i will no longer be offered; students who still need ENGL 102 should enroll in ENGL 105.
Students who still need to take ENGL 101 were encouraged to make every effort to enroll in the course in spring 2012. A few sections of ENGL 101 will be offered in fall 2012 to accommodate students who have not maintained continuous enrollment in a composition class since entering Carolina and who need the course to graduate. ENGL 105 will not substitute for ENGL 101.
There are no plans to offer ENGL 101, or the Portfolio Examination for ENGL 101 after fall 2012. Students who still need ENGL 101 but do not take it in fall 2012 may need to take a course at another institution that transfers as ENGL 101.
Only transfer students lacking credit for ENGL 105 will be able to take the portfolio examination in August 2012. First-time, first-year students and continuing UNC students hoping to place out of ENGL 100 or ENGL 105 will not have access to the portfolio exam.
More information about placement exams for transfer students only.
Information For Incoming Students with AP Language Credits
Students receiving a 4 or 5 on the AP Language and Composition exam will receive 3 BE credits for ENGL 110. These will be general credits toward graduation and will not fulfill any specific course requirement for graduation.
Note: ENGL 105 will be a required course for all incoming students.
Credit for ENGL 110 does NOT substitute for the required ENGL 105 course.
