I am working on a study of Defoe and Mandeville as unlikely sites for the sort of nostalgia usually associated with the Tory satirists. The classical touchstone for this is the peculiar combination of nostalgia and celebration of "labor" in Virgil's Georgics. The hope is to see Mandeville's ironic ambiguity and Defoe's (ironic?) inconsistency in a new light
