Shapiro has published 13 books of poetry (including Reel to Reel, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, and Night of the Republic, a finalist for both the National Book Award and the International Griffin Prize), a novel, Broadway Baby, two books of criticism, a translation of The Oresteia, and two memoirs (Vigil and The Last Happy Occasion, a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award). He was awarded The North Carolina Award in Literature in 2014, an award in literature from the American Academy of Arts, The Ambassador Book Award for Old War in 2008, The Los Angeles Times book Award for Mixed Company 1996, and the Kingsley Tufts Award, a prestigious national prize, for The Dead Alive and Busy, in 2001.
