Title(s)

William S. Newman Distinguished Professor of American Literature and Culture

Biography

My research interests range widely from the colonial era through the Civil war, in American literature and American Studies. Although I have written on a wide range of topics, including the history of American music, most recently I have returned to long-standing interests in American literature and religion.

In 2015 the University of North Carolina Press published his most recent work, The Life of William Apess, Pequot, the first biography of this important 19th century Native American intellectual and reformer. He is now at work on Panic: Romantic Reformers and the Coming of the Civil War, for Harvard University Press.
