Writing Diabetes: A Research Study

We are conducting a research study of how participating in a creative writing workshop can help people with diabetes. Our workshop offers a new form of diabetes therapy and support. The study will consist of a baseline visit, 8 writing workshops, and a follow up visit.

Do you have Diabetes? Do you like writing?

We are conducting a research study of how participating in a creative writing workshop can help people with diabetes. Our workshop offers a new form of diabetes therapy and support. The study will consist of a baseline visit, 8 writing workshops, and a follow up visit.

To participate in the study, you must:

  • Have diabetes (any type)
  • Be over the age of 18
  • Be comfortable reading, writing, and speaking in English
  • Be comfortable discussing and sharing your writing in a supportive group setting

Where: Baseline visits and follow up visits will be at the UNC Diabetes Clinic, 300 Meadowmont Lane, Chapel Hill, NC 27517. Workshop meetings will be held at the Seymour Center, 2551 Homestead Road, Chapel Hill, NC 2716. Both locations are on a Chapel Hill bus line.

When: The initial visit and follow up visits will be held in January and April. The workshop meetings will be held on Tuesday evenings from 6:30-8 p.m. from February 9th – March 29th. Refreshments included.

Falls: A Study of Older Adults’ Experience Telling Fall Narratives

Have you fallen or had a near fall experience?

Would you like to share your experience with students?

To participate in the research study you must:

  • Be 75 years of age or older and community dwelling,
  • Be comfortable speaking in English, and
  • Be comfortable discussing a fall experience with students.

Participation in this study entails:

  • Discussing your fall or near fall experience with students in face-to-face interviews in February 2016.
  • Writing or dictating a story about a fall.
  • A baseline visit, 3 interviews, and a follow-up phone call: 4 visits total.
  • No transportation necessary: we’ll come to you!

Participants will not be financially compensated for their participation in this study, but they will receive a copy of the story they have written with the help of the student interviewers.

Applications Open for Kenan Visiting Writer

The Creative Writing Program in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Department of English and Comparative Literature seeks to bring an emerging talent to campus for a one-year teaching appointment as the Kenan Visiting Writer, a position that alternates between poetry, prose and creative non-fiction. For the 2016-2017 academic year, the Program requests applicants in FICTION.

This one-year appointment carries an annual salary of $32,000. The selected candidate will teach one undergraduate creative writing course per semester, most likely at the introductory level. The selected candidate will also give one major public reading and otherwise participate fully in the life of the Creative Writing Program.

An M.F.A. in Creative Writing is required.

Applicants should have:

• Significant publication in major literary magazines
• Published one recent book or have one book under contract (no more) 
• Previous college teaching experience, and 
• A willingness to relocate to Chapel Hill for one year.

By 5:00 p.m. on February 15, 2016, applicants should apply online at and submit:

Nathaniel Cadle, UNC PhD, wins 2015 SAMLA Book Prize

UNC Graduate Nathaniel Cadle was awarded with the SAMLA Studies Book Award for his book, The Mediating Nation: Late American Realism, Globalization, and the Progressive State, at the SAMLA (South Atlantic Modern Language Association) Conference this past November 13-15, 2015. Dr. Cadle was also recently promoted to Associate Professor at Florida International University. Congratualtions to Dr. Cadle on his many recent successes!

M.A. in English with a Concentration in Literature, Medicine, and Culture

In collaboration with the Department of Social Medicine, the Department of Occupational Sciences, and the Department of Anthropology, the Department of English and Comparative Literature offers a special course of study leading to a Master of Arts degree with a concentration in Literature, Medicine, and Culture.  Students enrolled in the concentration are expected participate in interdisciplinary coursework and research projects with faculty from across the University of North Carolina.

Professor Jeanne Moskal Delivers Plenary Lecture at "Beauty and Belief" Symposium

Jeanne Moskal delivered the plenary lecture "The Unspoken and the Unspeakable in Missionary Literature" at the recent "Beauty and Belief" Symposium at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. She particularly enjoyed addressing an audience that included dozens of returned missionaries. Her former advisee, Professor Jena Al-Fuhaid of Kuwait University, presented her research on Islamic motifs in Browning and Tennyson, and her current advisee Carlie Wetzel spoke on elegies for children by Victorian poet Beebe Eyre.
